I loved this one from the first minute. No high speed car chases with camera viewpoint changing every half a second. But a great adventurous feel-good movie. What I found fascinating is the lighting here. Although everything was probably filmed on ground level, the have succeeded in creating lighting conditions that resemble those at the altitudes they were flying.

On the surface, “The Aeronauts” — a movie inspired by a real, mid-19th century balloon adventure — would seem to be the inspiring story of a British man, James Glaisher, and British woman, Amelia Wren, who soared higher into the sky than any persons before them. Riding their gas balloon in 1862, the scientist and pilot surpass the previous flight record of 23, 000 feet, set by the French, and triumphantly defy the odds. Thrilled, I began writing my review on the train home. But after a quick Google search to check some facts, the dramas star rating plummeted faster than the pairs balloon does at the end. Amelia Wren, it turns out, never existed. The actually real Glaisher was joined by a guy named Henry Tracey Coxwell, who writer Jack Thorne has unceremoniously scrubbed from history to satisfy a politically correct agenda. Coxwell has been he-rased. Sex-cised. Its as if I wrote a film called “The Story of the Airplane, ” and made the main characters Orville and Suzanne. Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones in a scene from “The Aeronauts. ” Amazon Studios/AP Swallowing the truth forces you to reconsider your reaction to every strong moment director Tom Harpers film has, and there are plenty. As the two — nicely played by Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones — fly higher and begin to freeze, Glaisher passes out and Wren is forced to rescue the vehicle in an action-packed sequence. The audience cheers at her extraordinary perseverance. A woman, mocked and kept down for her gender during a highly sexist era, saves the day. Hurrah! Sorry, folks, she never lived. When watching “The Aeronauts” as a piece of mostly fiction, the movie is decent. Jones and Redmayne have chemistry respectively as a soul-searching adventurer and as a scientist with his head buried in books. And, for a film that takes place largely in a basket, Harper manages an epic mood. Nonetheless, you cant help but feel swindled by Hollywoods hot air.

Amazon Rating: PG-13 Run time: 1 hour 41 minutes Stars: Tom Courtenay, Felicity Jones, Eddie Redmayne, Himesh Patel Director: Tom Harper En español, The Aeronauts isn't really historically accurate, but it does give you the most vivid sense imaginable for what it felt like to be British meteorological adventurers James Glaisher, then 53, and Henry Coxwell, 43, who barely escaped death in 1862 when they were the first humans to ride a hot-air balloon seven miles above the earth, where jets fly today and the air is minus 22 degrees. They had a smashing view — but Glaisher, making scientific notes about his skin turning funny colors, began to pass out from altitude sickness and tried to yell to Coxwell, only to discover that his mouth, arms and head wouldn't move, and his mind was freezing up, too. Thereby hangs a nail-biter of a tale, and director Tom Harper makes it a whooshing, pulse-pounding experience. Harper, whose recent Wild Rose is a must-see hit about a fiery Scottish singer, swaps out Coxwell for an imaginary, rich female aeronaut named Amelia Wren (Felicity Jones) with her The Theory of Everything star Eddie Redmayne as Glaisher. Jones character is inspired by French balloonist Sophie Blanchard, who favored elaborate costumes, plumed hats and nighttime flights with fireworks — which, unfortunately, ignited her balloon in 1819, killing her in a blaze of glory as she fell to earth, her white dress fluttering like angel wings. Other things happen to Amelia, whose flair for drama deepens the film's period-picture grandeur and plays well against Redmayne's nerdy scientist role. She does cartwheels to wow the crowd at their fateful launch as Glaisher, intent on using his various instruments to learn to predict the weather, shows more interest in the gizmos and pigeons he packs into their perilous basket. She tosses a dog out from 100 feet up, the crowd gasps — then the pooch's parachute opens and they laugh. Exciting sights, superb sound design and spectacular drama ensue. He's got one loyal friend ( Yesterday 's Himesh Patel, whose talent is wasted on a one-note role with dull dialogue) and a science academy full of upper-class twits who razz him for believing in the future of weather reports and flying men. Legendary Tom Courtenay, 82, plays his dementia-afflicted father whose cognition comes and goes. It's a touching performance, but the relationship feels tacked on to the story. Amelia's flashbacks involve her late husband (Vincent Perez, 55) who died in a ballooning accident that still messes with her irrationally guilty mind, as well as her traditionalist sister (Phoebe Fox) who thinks this aeronaut business is all nonsense and not fit for a proper lady. Their scenes fall to earth like the pigeon Glaisher sets free to fly at a great, inspiring height, only to watch in horror as it plunges like a rock. (That part really happened in 1862. ) But the aerial scenes that dominate the film do soar in wonderful ways, and there's real tension as dangers mount, tempers fray, fingers fumble, minds fade and ice relentlessly embraces the balloon and its pilots. It might have worked better to have them fall in love as they ascend to scary areas with clouds like mountains — since Amelia isn't real, why not? — but their quarrelsome-pal bonding works OK in dramatic terms, and these two retain the chemistry that made their Stephen Hawking film beloved. Jones is a beauty of rare intelligence and magnetism, and somebody should cast her in a great big action hit with her at its center. This isn't quite it, but it isn't half bad. It's in theaters for a couple weeks, and then streams on Amazon. If I were you, I'd watch it on a big screen while I had the chance. Amazons original movie, The Aeronauts, offers pleasing-enough family viewing that most ages can enjoy. It traces the true- ish story of how two Victorians nearly lost their lives breaking the French altitude record. And how they did it in a basket dangling under an inflated cloth bag at a height that jets typically soar at today. CLIP: 23, 900 feet. Were rising even more quickly now. Did you know? Could you tell? Its because the air is thinner. Shes expanding. We should think of slowing. The air is aiding our ascent. Isnt that outstanding! Royal Society astronomer James Glaisher, played by Eddie Redmayne, isnt particularly interested in indulging in the latest 19th century craze—taking an aerial pleasure cruise. Armed with gauges and instruments of his own design, hes set his sights on the wild blue yonder in the cause of science. The problem is no reputable male balloon pilot is willing to take him as high as he needs to go for his measurements. So he turns to renowned female aeronaut Amelia Wren, played by Felicity Jones. CLIP: Thank you for the dance. I didnt realize that appearances were so important to you and Im sorry that they dont live up to this society standard. I dont care about your shoes, I care that youre lying to me. Itll be your balloon. All I ask is that I be given the freedom to undertake my experiments. I am not a coachman for hire. Good because Im looking for a fellow scientist. To understand the weather Miss Wren is to understand how to make ships and sailors safer, farms more productive so we can prepare ourselves and world for floods, droughts, famines. We could save thousands of lives. I want to rewrite the rules of the air, Miss Wren. And I need your help. So will you help me? This brings up the weakest point in an otherwise fine voyage. While James Glaisher was a very real person, Amelia Wren was not. Aeronautics was considered enough of a theatrical pseudoscience that it offered a haven to 19th century women of an adventurous nature. Screenwriter Jack Thorne says these are the historical figures that inspired him to create Amelia. Unfortunately, too often when filmmakers talk about “composite” characters, it plays out on the screen as “generic characters. ” Thats the case here. A quick Google search brings up a host of fascinating tidbits about the real women and their varied approaches to their field. You can see magpie bits turn up in Amelia, but they dont hang together to create a uniquely compelling individual. Worse, Amelia deprives viewers of some golden opportunities to discover some truly fascinating background on the birth of modern weather science. CLIP: Gentlemen, gentlemen! We know more now about this world around us than at any moment in our history. And yet still we are limited by our ignorance as to what is truly above us. Now with the progress that we have made in balloon ascent here at the Society, pioneered by Charles Green, we could advance meteorology by decades. Analysis of the Earths magnetic field, the solar spectrum, knowledge of the dew point, understanding of oxygenation of the atmosphere—He wants my balloon! No sir, I ask for funding for my own expedition into the skies. By gathering enough data I believe that we will be able to uncover patterns and correlations that…Sir, we are scientists not fortune-tellers. You are talking about weather prediction. Glaishers achievement that clear blue day in 1862 helped develop meteorological tools still in use today. Likeable as Jones performance is, why did Glaishers actual pilot—a dashing figure named Henry Coxwell—need to be supplanted by a fictional jill-of-all-trades? Why pass over a terrific tale of two death-defying brothers-in-arms in favor of the same old free-spirited-lady-teaches-stodgy-man-how-to-embrace-life trope? Im not sure women needed greater representation in the story. But if they did, why couldnt Thorne have invented scenes that highlighted the real women who actually were inspirations to Coxwell? Famed balloonist Margaret Graham would have been a great addition. The Aeronauts is not only unfair to write Coxwell out of history but also to paint a rather inaccurate portrait of Glaisher. This was a man known to wax poetic about the sky as a “boundless sea of inquiry. ” To describe a common road as seen from the air as a “line of brilliant fire. ” He shouldnt be reduced to a Sheldon Cooper cold fish. CLIP: Mr. Glaisher, you are airborne for the first time in your life. I suggest you spend less time frowning at me and more taking in this beautiful world we just left. Quite something, isnt she, London? But I dont want to come off too negative. It is a shame that Thorne fails to follow Glaisher and Coxwells example of defying convention. Still, The Aeronauts does a good job working within the stereotypes. The dare-devilry dazzles. The scenery staggers. And the science inspires. For children in that 8 to 12 range who are just beginning to appreciate thrilling tales that dont star animated characters, The Aeronauts is a clear winner. Its rated PG-13 for realistic peril alone. And what it lacks in original storytelling, it makes up for in exuberance. In THE AERONAUTS, scientist James Glaisher ( Eddie Redmayne) wants to measure air patterns and temperatures in order to predict the weather, a task his peers consider a ridiculous idea. But when he teams up with daring pilot Amelia Wren ( Felicity Jones) they come up with a plan to fly a hot air balloon higher than anyone ever has. Once they're in the air, their majestic journey quickly turns into a fight for survival as they face the elements. Is it any good? The characters are inspiring, the story elements fascinating, and the visual effects breathtaking, but The Aeronauts still falls flat. Writer-director Tom Harper unspools the real-life record-setting balloon journey in close to real time, which creates a problem: That's a lot of happy floating time before nature threatens the expedition. One result is many wistful looks up toward the sky paired with "important" conversation that's obvious padding. Another solution is to recount Wren and Glaisher's backstory and motivations through flashbacks, a standard cinematic device that doesn't work smoothly here. Sometimes it seems like they've jumped forward in time, or you're not sure whose story we're looking at. Chances are good some kids will be confused, and since the technique is used a lot, that's a problem. This is especially disappointing given the movie's potential to positively influence youth. Through Glaisher and Wren's adventure, scientific experimentation feels exciting. Yes, there's lots of fiddling with gauges and talk of structural integrity, but the notion of using scientific research to improve and save lives against the backdrop of being caught in a storm of Twister proportions is captivating. Wren embodies what it means to be bold in the sense that she steps outside of Victorian-era gender roles to follow her passion, as well as in the sense that she's fearless. Playing her, Jones emotes regret and caution while rediscovering her own will and courage. When she climbs on top of the balloon to break the ice that's preventing a descent, it's a thrilling moment for women: With dramatic flair, Amelia uses her heel to break a symbolic glass ceiling. The gorgeous shots of the balloon gliding through the sky and weathering the storm are the stuff artists dream of creating, and. factoring in the death-defying actions and stunts - the result is a cinematic wonder. Still, just like some scientific trials, The Aeronauts may have all the elements of success, but the outcome doesn't yield the desired results. Talk to your kids about... Directed by Tom Harper ( Wild Rose, Peaky Blinders) and written by Jack Thorne ( Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) The Aeronauts is an old school adventure film that, at times, is incredibly fun. But if youre looking to get a history lesson out of the film, you may want to proceed with caution. Is The Aeronauts based on a true story? Yes. The Aeronauts is based on the true story of James Glaisher, who went higher than any human being had gone before in 1862. However, as you will read below, several key details of this story were altered. Who is Jame Glaisher, Eddie Redmaynes character in The Aeronauts? James Glaisher was an English meteorologist, aeronaut, and astronomer most notable for breaking the world record for the highest altitude reached by a human in 1862. He did this via hot air balloon, usually with his co-pilot, Henry Tracey Coxwell. Traveling to such heights enabled him to collect important weather-related data by measuring the temperature and humidity of the atmosphere at very high levels, which helped pioneer the science of weather forecasting. Glaisher lived until he was 93, and died in 1903. Who is Amelia Wren, Felicity Joness character in The Aeronauts? Amelia Wren, Redmaynes pilot in The Aeronauts, is a fictional character invented by screenwriter Jack Thorne. She is based on Henry Tracey Coxwell, who saved Glaishers life after the meteorologist passed out on their record-breaking ascent into the sky. According to an article in The Times, it was Coxwell who climbed to the top of the balloon to release the stuck valve, as we see Amelia do in the film. Im all for female ballooning representation—and Jones has a lot of fun with the role—but I feel kinda bad for this Coxwell dude. Plus, it makes all that backstory we get on Amelias dead husband—which is revealed via flashback—feel a bit meaningless. How accurate is The Aeronauts? Well, in regards to inventing a whole new character: Not very! Other details, however, do reflect what most think to be true about this historic journey. As we see in the film, Glaisher really did pass out on his journey up into the stars, and therefore missed the moment when his balloon reached its highest point. Historians estimate that point to be about 35, 000 feet above sea-level. His data collection did make great strides in weather science, and he was considered a pioneer in weather forecasting. I cannot find any evidence that his fellow scientists laughed in his face when he suggested weather prediction might be possible, as we see in the film, but, hey, a good story needs stakes. The Aeronauts will not (and should not) be played in history classes any time soon. But its still a fun adventure film about Eddie Redmayne in a hot air balloon. What more do you want? First, if 100 reviewers are griping that Henry Coxwell, the actual co-pilot was robbed of credit then that same 100 reviewers ALL know and credit Coxwell. I assume many or most do what I do with 'based on real events films' to wit: I go to Wiki and check the 'real' story since I know the film was fictionalized. I am told that at the outset. Then I will read about and credit Coxwell, still having enjoyed the film. If I had a dollar for every person and/or event has been fictionalized in such films I would be truly wealthy.
Next, did women fly balloons at or prior to the 1860s. YES! 19-year-old Frenchwoman named Elisabeth Thible was the first woman to go on an untethered balloon flight in June, 1784. One or more women died ballooning in the early pre 1860 years! Perhaps the film makers were paying homage to such gallant bakloonist women!
Coxwell is long gone and does not feel any personal affront. True history is easly determined per WIKI etc. so that we can, as I do, learn and appreciate the true stories and heroes.
The movie is a fun, beautiful ride. Enjoy.
