In 1948, Clarence Thomas was born into dire poverty in Pin Point, Georgia, a Gullah- speaking peninsula in the segregated South. His father abandoned the family when Clarence was two years old. His mother, unable to care for two boys, brought Clarence and his brother, Myers, to live with her father and his wife. Thomas’ grandfather, Myers Anderson, whose schooling ended at the third grade, delivered coal and heating oil in Savannah. He gave the boys tough love and training in hard work. He sent them to a segregated Catholic school where the Irish nuns taught them self-discipline and a love of learning. From there, Thomas entered the seminary, training to be a priest. As the times changed, Thomas began to rebel against the values of his grandfather. His grandfather felt Thomas had betrayed him by questioning his values and kicked Thomas out of his house. In 1968, Thomas enrolled as a scholarship student at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts. While there, he helped found the Black Student Union and supported the burgeoning Black Power Movement. Then, Thomas’s views began to change, as he saw it, back to his grandfather’s values. He judged the efforts of the left and liberals to help his people to be demeaning failures. To him, affirmative action seemed condescending and ineffective, sending African-American students to schools where they were not prepared to succeed. He watched the busing crisis in Boston tear the city apart. To Thomas, it made no sense. Why, he asked, pluck poor black kids out of their own bad schools only to bus them to another part of town to sit with poor white students in their bad schools? At Yale Law School, he felt stigmatized by affirmative action, treated as if he were there only because of his race, minimizing his previous achievements. After graduating in 1974, he worked for then State Attorney General John Danforth in Missouri, eventually working in the Reagan administration, first running the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Education and then the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In 1990, he became a judge on the U. S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. In 1991, President George H. W. Bush nominated Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. His confirmation hearings would test his character and principles in the crucible of national controversy. Like the Bork hearings in 1987, the Democrats went after Thomas’ record and his jurisprudence, especially natural law theory, but also attacked his character. When that failed, and he was on the verge of being confirmed, a former employee, Anita Hill, came forth to accuse him of sexual harassment. The next few days of televised hearings riveted the nation. Finally, defending himself against relentless attacks by the Democratic Senators on the committee, Thomas accused them of running “a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas. ” After wall-to-wall television coverage, according to the national polls, the American people believed Thomas by more than a 2-1 margin. Yet, Thomas was confirmed by the closest margin in history, 52-48. In his 27 years on the court, Thomas’s jurisprudence has often been controversial—from his brand of originalism to his decisions on affirmative action and other hot button topics. Critical journalists often point out that he rarely speaks in oral argument. The public remains curious about Clarence Thomas—both about his personal history and his judicial opinions. His 2007 memoir, My Grandfather’s Son, was number one on The New York Times’ bestseller list. In addition to the two-hour feature length documentary film, a companion website providing more details and curriculum materials will be created and available. There was zero overarching story/meaning behind it, just a bunch of artists recording and performing 2 albums. which could have been interesting but since there were no interviews, no meaningful interactions, zero in depth explanation of anything. it wasn't.
It felt exactly like someone going on holiday and just filming a 20second clip every day and stitching it together when they got home. But instead of just showing it to whoever was on the vacation and some friends and laughing at the memories and antics they made it 1.5 hours long, charged 16 euros, hyped it up by being all mysterious, and bored the crap out of everyone watching.
I was there with a friend and long term fan of the gorillaz (since album 1) and the first thing he said to me when the lights came on was 'I tought it was never gonna end! Finally. br> I think that says enough...

Similar to Hewlett's reason for falling out with Albarn, this thing doesn't seem the slightest bit interested in the fictional characters which are the Gorillaz. And as good as the music is, I have little interest watching random collaboraters bounce on stage for a feature length doco. Is it not enough to sit somewhere dark and see Damon Albarn, huge? Well that was certainly a lot of recording sessions, backstage banter and tour performances with next to zero context. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it but there really wasn't a whole lot of sustance to this "documentary" and is only really for hardcore fans of the band who just wanna watch them perform in a bunch of places. It's a feature length-ish tour compilation and it does that well enough but you're not gonna learn anything about the creation of the music or the difficulties of running a world tour involving over 100 musicans but they sure looked like they were having fun. A glorified YouTube video showing some behind the scenes recording sessions and live performances this is. A remotely interesting documentary looking into one of my favourite bands ever, this isn’t. I’ve loved Gorillaz, like many for years now and though The Now Now is definitely one of their weakest albums, I actually really did enjoy Humanz for the most part. A feature length documentary looking into Damon Albarn and the band as they journey through a three year long tour for both albums is an intriguing idea on paper that’s handled ever so poorly here. The film offers no actual insight on the music, artists, lyrics or other band members whatsoever, only showing short clips from various celebrities, both in studio and on stage. It charts the journey of a couple moving through tough times and is as thoughtful and nuanced as you'd hope. Its story is rather straightforward (it's pretty much exactly what you'd expect) but it delivers what it needs to and feels all the more 'real' because of it. The focus of the film is something that isn't actually explored all that often and it's great to see it portrayed so sensitively here. The picture's grounded, non- romanticised' romance is brilliant, too. It feels as close to 'real' as possible, an honest and moving exploration of love that never seems heightened or false. The two stars deliver the goods in their subtle, harder-than-you-may-expect roles, coming together as a compelling pair of, essentially, real people. They have flaws and they argue but they also have an undeniable connection. When this is exploited, it's really heart-warming. When it comes down to it, though, the flick just isn't all that exciting or, perhaps, impactful. It's engaging enough and never even close to boring, but it doesn't quite hit home as hard as it ought to. It's good, don't get me wrong. Was aber neu ist: Die absurde Behauptung deutscher Aktivisten, nach der das Grundrecht auf Rechtshilfe zu Antisemitismus führe, wenn eine israelisch-jüdische Anwältin Palästinenser verteidigt. Wir beobachten eine Fortsetzung von beunruhigenden Trends in Deutschland: Erstens die Verleumdung von Menschenrechtsaktivisten im Kontext Palästina-Israel; zweitens die Verwendung der IHRA(International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance)-Definition des Antisemitismus zu diesem Zwecke; drittens die Taktik des öffentlichen Drucks auf Inhaber von Veranstaltungsräumen, diese zu verweigern und auf diesem Wege die Rede- und Meinungsfreiheit zu untergraben, wenn es um die Rechte der Palästinenser und derjenigen geht, die sie unterstützen. Rosa Luxemburg und Lea Tsemel sind Teil der stolzen Tradition jüdischer Frauen, die sich den Werten von Gerechtigkeit und Humanität zutiefst verpflichtet fühlen. Der Dokumentarfilm "Lea Tsemel, Anwältin" schildert ihre Arbeit. Palästinenser suchen rechtlichen Beistand bei ihr. Hinterbliebene von Terroropfern in Israel kritisieren sie dagegen scharf. Und die israelische Regierung wirft ihr vor, dass sie den Staat Israel zerstören möchte. Ebenso umstritten wie Tsemel selbst ist der Film über sie. Als er dieses Jahr den Preis des Docaviv-Festivals gewann, hat der israelische Kulturminister das Festival aufgefordert, die Preisverleihung auszusetzen. Nicht weniger kontrovers ist der im Film geschilderte Fall. Es geht um den 13-jährigen Ahmad. Zusammen mit seinem Bruder ist er 2015 mit einem Messer durch einen jüdischen Stadtteil in Jerusalem gezogen. Dabei wurde ein 13-jähriger Jude schwer verletzt, Ahmads Bruder wurde von Sicherheitskräften erschossen. Lea Tsemel vertritt Ahmad vor Gericht und steckt in einem Dilemma, weil Ahmad noch nicht strafmündig ist. Die Frage ist nun, ob er ein Geständnis ablegt und anstatt ins Gefängnis in ein Jugendheim eingewiesen wird. Oder soll er auf "unschuldig" plädieren und riskieren, dass er während eines langen Prozesses das strafmündige Alter erreicht? Das Gericht erklärt letztlich, dass Ahmad des zweifachen Mordversuchs schuldig ist. Lea Tsemel kann vor dem obersten Gerichtshof jedoch reduzierte Strafe von neun anstatt zwölf Jahren erreichen. Der Verlauf des Prozess wird dann zwischengeschnitten mit historischen Aufnahmen von Tsemel. Sie hat sich nach dem Sechstage-Krieg 1967 einer linken israelischen Gruppe angeschlossen und vor allem die Verhörmethoden von Polizei und Geheimdienst in den Mittelpunkt ihrer Arbeit gestellt. So hat sie vor dem obersten Gericht in Israel erreicht, dass körperliche Methoden in Verhören als illegal erklärt werden. "Lea Tsemel, Anwältin" zeigt Tsemel vor Gericht, aber auch in sehr persönlichen Szenen in ihrer Kanzlei und im Kreis ihrer Familie. Aber diese Nähe und Intimität sind zugleich das Problem dieser Doku. Man lernt Lea Tsemel gut kennen, sowohl ihren Optimismus, als auch ihre schroffe Art. Andererseits lässt die Regisseurin Leah Rachel Jones nur sie, ihre Familie und Freunde sowie ihre Mandanten zu Wort kommen. Es fehlen einordnenden Kommentare zu ihren juristischen und politischen Behauptungen. auch ihre politischen Gegner oder die Richter, die mit ihr zu tun haben, werden nicht interviewt. Deshalb rutscht der Film oft in einen Pathos ab, den viele Berichte über den Nahostkonflikt haben und der die Situation simplifiziert: gute Palästinenser kämpfen gegen böse Israelis. Die Taten von Tsemels Mandanten werden etwa immer als Widerstand gegen die Besatzung beschrieben werden, auch wenn sie gegen Zivilisten gerichtet sind. "Lea Tsemel, Anwältin" ist zwar ein sehenswerter Film, aber unkritisch konsumieren sollte man ihn nicht.

Ihr Mandant ist der 13-jährige Ahmad. Für die Israelis ist der Palästinenserjunge ein Terrorist, der eine hohe Gefängnisstrafe verdient hat, egal wie es zu der tödlichen Messerattacke kam, egal wie jung er ist. Für die Palästinenser ist er ein willkommenes Opfer, um die Methoden der Israelis anzuprangern. An Lea Tsemels schwierigstem Fall lässt sich das ganze Drama des nationalen Konflikts darstellen. Der Dokumentarfilm behandelt den israelisch-palästinensischen Konflikt, indem er seine Protagonistin ins Zentrum stellt. Der Film stellt dabei grundlegende Fragen: Welchen Preis zahlt Lea Tsemel persönlich und ihre Familie für ihren Kampf um Gerechtigkeit? Was bedeutet Gerechtigkeit vor dem Hintergrund des unlösbaren Nahostkonflikts? Und was bedeuten diese Fragen, wenn das Opfer, ein Kind, auch Täter ist? Über den Zeitraum eines Jahres erleben die Zuschauer die Höhen und Tiefen der Anwältin im Kampf für ihren minderjährigen Mandaten in schwierigen, berührenden Gesprächen mit den Angehörigen oder bei vertraulichen Beratungen ihrer mitunter riskanten Verteidigungsstrategie mit ihrem Ko-Verteidiger und engsten Vertrauten im Fall Ahmad, Tareq Barghout. Die Kamera ist immer dabei, wie sich dramatische Szenen direkt vor und nach den Gerichtsverhandlungen beim Zusammentreffen mit Ahmad abspielen. Diese werden kunstvoll und geschickt durch Animationen verfremdet, um das Persönlichkeitsrecht des minderjährigen Angeklagten zu schützen. Die Flure des Gerichts werden zum Schauplatz eines Dramas. Lea Tsemel tritt nach jedem Verhandlungstag vor die Presse, in direkter Konfrontation mit ihrem Kontrahenten, dem Staatsanwalt, während vor dem Gerichtsgebäude palästinensische Frauen gegen eine rassistische israelische Justiz demonstrieren. Geleakte Bilder einer Überwachungskamera werden eingeschnitten, die die brutalen Verhörmethoden der israelischen Beamten belegen, denen Ahmad ohne jeden familiären oder juristischen Beistand ausgesetzt ist. Außerdem belegt TV-Archivmaterial aus israelischen Nachrichtensendungen, wie skrupellos beide politische Lager den Fall Ahmad instrumentalisieren, um den Konflikt zusätzlich zu schüren. Historisches Archivmaterial seit dem Sechstagekrieg 1967 und privates Archivmaterial zeichnen Lea Tsemels privaten und beruflichen Werdegang parallel zu dem Geschehen um Ahmads Prozess nach. Sie verteidigt auch Terroristen. In der ARD läuft über sie am Mittwoch eine Dokumentation, der die Distanz zu seinem Subjekt fehlt. Eine Rezension von Michael Müller Lea Tsemel ist eine jüdische Anwältin, die seit 50 Jahren Palästinenser in Israel verteidigt: Terroristen, Demonstranten, politische Gefangene und Fundamentalisten. Sie sieht sich als Vorkämpferin für Menschenrechte an. Einmal sagt sie über ihre Motivation im Dokumentarfilm „Lea Tsemel, Anwältin“, den die ARD am heutigen Mittwoch um 22. 45 Uhr ausstrahlt: „Ich bin Israelin und Besatzerin. Da es mir nicht gelungen ist, das Regime, das an der Macht ist, zu ändern, bin ich bereit, Fälle zu übernehmen, in denen sich Menschen bewusst gegen die Besatzung wehren. “ Als der Film Anfang Juni auf einem Tel Aviver Festival als bester Dokumentarfilm ausgezeichnet und mit einem Preisgeld von umgerechnet 17. 500 Euro bedacht wurde, meldete sich die israelische Kulturministerin Miri Regev. „Keine Film-Spezialeffekte können verdecken, welche Arbeit Tsemel gegen den Staat Israel und seine Bürger macht“, kommentierte Regev den Preis. Mit den Spezialeffekten spielte sie auf die Eigenart des Films an, die angeklagten Palästinenser mit einem visuellen Stilmittel comichaft zu verfremden, so dass ihre Identität geschützt bleibt. Die beiden Filmemacher Rachel Leah Jones und Philippe Bellaiche folgen der 73-jährigen Anwältin vor allem bei einem Fall. Zwei junge Palästinenser jagten mit Messern Passanten in Jerusalem durch die Straßen, bis sie Sicherheitskräfte niederschossen. Einer der beiden Terroristen, erst 13 Jahre alt, überlebte die Schüsse. Es ist vielleicht der Schlüsselmoment der Dokumentation, weil der Zuschauer die Ereignisse in Bild und Ton präsentiert bekommt. Aufnahmen von Überwachungskameras werden mit der Amateur-Aufnahme eines Passanten zusammengeschnitten. Dieser hat gefilmt, wie die Kugeln den Palästinenser auf den Schienen der Jerusalemer Straßenbahn trafen. Was den Rechtsstaat ausmacht Es ist ein schwer erträglicher Ausschnitt: Das Gesicht des Jungen ist unkenntlich gemacht, aber er ist mit verdrehten Beinen auf den Gleisen liegend zu sehen. Der filmende Passant brüllt aus dem Off, dass die Sicherheitsbeamten doch ihren Job erledigen und dem „Hurensohn“ einen Kopfschuss verpassen sollten. Den habe er verdient. Genau an diesem Punkt fangen aber die Fragen zu Selbstjustiz und Rechtsstaat an. Und wenn auch dieser Junge mit seinem Messer einen Prozess verdient, wer ihn dann überhaupt verteidigt. Die Dokumentation „Lea Tsemel, Anwältin“ ist voller solcher unbequemer und schmerzhafter Momente. Ein geleaktes Verhörvideo der israelischen Polizei, in dem der Beamte den jungen Angeklagten quasi zum Geständnis schreien will; der israelische Premier Benjamin Netanjahu, der sich vor dem Prozess per Pressekonferenz in den Fall einmischt; junge Palästinenserinnen, die sich gegenüber dem Angeklagten fast groupiehaft als seine Mütter bezeichnen und für ihn weinen wollen, weil er für sie ein Märtyrer sei. Die angehende Anwältin Lea Tsemel bei der Arbeit SWR/privat Konzept erinnert an Doku über Klaus-Barbie-Verteidiger Ein Stück weit erinnert der Film an die deutlich vielschichtigere Dokumentation „Im Auftrag des Terrors“ des französischen Filmemachers Barbet Schroeder aus dem Jahr 2007. Darin geht es um den Anwalt Jacques Vergès, der weltweite Bekanntheit erlangte, weil er in Frankreich den Terroristen Carlos, Mitglieder der Guerillabewegung Rote Khmer und den „Schlächter von Lyon“, Gestapo-Chef Klaus Barbie, verteidigte. Eine Hauptmotivation für seine Arbeit zog Vergès aus der Gewalt und den Verbrechen, welche die Franzosen in den Kolonien begangen haben. Geboren wurde er im Königreich Siam, dem heutigen Thailand. Schroeders Darstellung des Anwalts Vergès ist ausgewogener, weil er Stimmen aus verschiedenen politischen Spektren zu Wort kommen lässt und ein breiteres Bild zeichnet. Der Film „Lea Tsemel, Anwältin“ klebt seiner Protagonistin dagegen an den Fersen. Als O-Töne gibt es nur ihren antizionistischen Mann Michel Warschawski und ihre beiden erwachsenen Kinder zu hören, die sie sehr unterstützen. Sich selbst kündigt Tsemel einmal angesichts ihrer rechtlichen Härtefälle als die Anwältin an, die immer verliert. Etwas mehr Distanz zum Subjekt hätte dem Film gut getan. Außerdem ist bemerkenswert, wie schnell die von SWR und NDR co-produzierte Dokumentation im deutschen Fernsehen zu sehen ist. Die Weltpremiere war erst im Januar auf dem amerikanischen Festival in Sundance. Aktuell läuft der Film eigentlich noch auf Festivals weltweit. Offenbar war es den Öffentlich-Rechtlichen ein Anliegen, ihn so schnell wie möglich den deutschen Zuschauern zu zeigen. „Lea Tsemel, Anwältin“, Regie: Rachel Leah Jones & Philippe Bellaiche, 90 Minuten, am 10. Juli um 22. 45 Uhr in der ARD.
